Since Arnold Schönberg first articulated his idea of “Klangfarbenmelodie” in the “Harmonielehre” of 1911, it has remained a fascinating but elusive concept, which has been interpreted in a variety of ways. Not only Schönberg, Webern, and Berg, but also subsequent generations of composers including Ligeti, Cerha, Penderecki, and Saariaho, have taken this as an inspiration to compose with timbre and texture. In this seminar we will examine the increased importance of tone color in twentieth-century composition, through readings both by and about these composers as well as through analysis of select compositions.
